The ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ Information Technology Service Desk has the following computer recommendations.
While the IT Department doesn’t have a specific brand, make, or model preference, we have outlined some notes and information.
- Select a computer that is in your budget
- One that you are familiar with and comfortable working with
- A standard laptop or desktop computer is required
- Tablets, Chromebooks, and other mobile devices do not meet the minimum software requirements for some applications used at ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ
- These tablets can be useful for note-taking
- We do recommend you check with your degree program administrator or adviser to confirm if there are any software requirements for your major to ensure that it will run on the machine you are looking into.
Here are some general hardware component recommendations and software suggestions that can help you determine the minimum recommended equipment:
Components Options:
- Processor options
- Processor Options: Intel or AMD processor, 2 GHz or faster
- RAM Requirements
- At least 8GB of RAM
- Hard drive capacity:
- 250GB SSD minimum or 500GB HDD for more space
- Wi-Fi card with WiFi 6 (with 802.11AX capabilities)
- Microsoft Office (or similar word processing & spreadsheet programs) which can be accessed with current student login credentials
- Adobe Reader (or similar PDF reader)
- Google Chrome and/or Safari
Your ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ Network account provides your email account which runs on the Google platform and we recommend students use Google Drive to store their documents, homework, and projects in the Drive. This storage location is in the cloud, which allows for consistent backup of files, a large storage capacity, and ease of access from anywhere at any time just like email!
We realize this is pretty general information. Our office can help students with basic issues (virus scans, antivirus, troubleshooting) on all computer makes & models, so it is truly a matter of personal preference and budget when it comes to your personal machine.
If you have any additional questions or issues accessing your ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ accounts, please feel free to contact us directly at 207-973-1000 or Toll-Free at 866-416-7488 and we will be happy to assist. Thank you!
To protect your equipment, it is recommended that you keep an up-to-date Anti-Virus program and an Anti-Malware program installed on your machine and run them weekly (or more if you are a heavy internet user).
Sophos is the preferred Antivirus program that ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ provides to all faculty & staff computers.
Sophos runs by itself in the background of all ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ machines that run on the University Network. This application does not need to be started or activated as it scans the machine automatically when the computer is on. In most cases, the only time you will interact with the application is if a virus warning comes up in the taskbar.
If you would like assistance with installing and managing the Sophos application please call or visit the IT Help Desk at your convenience. The IT Call Center can be reached at X1000 or External 207.973.1000.
